Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is broad and balanced and seeks to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of the children in our school. It seeks to uphold traditional Catholic values and traditions.

In KS1 and KS2 it is based on the requirements of the 2014 National Curriculum which is built around developing essential knowledge, skills and understanding within subjects. Across the academic year, children are given the opportunity to experience each subject. Subjects are planned together into topics in KS1 and KS2.

We aim for our curriculum to be:

Enjoyable and Experiential

We want children to be involved in activities which motivate them. The curriculum will provide learning events and opportunities that children can share together and provide memorable experiences for them.

Well Resourced

St. Joseph’s is very well resourced. We have fantastic outdoor provision which our children very much enjoy. Classrooms are bright, comfortable and inviting learning spaces. Our children are able to access learning through well-resourced topics.

Inclusive

Our curriculum can be accessed by all children. Staff work very hard to ensure all children are provided with equal opportunities regardless of their starting point, social, medical or physical needs.

Personalised

Our curriculum provides opportunities for children to find out about their local area and its heritage. We make the most of our local environment and the facilities it offers. We want to develop lively and enquiring minds and ensure children understand something of the world in which we live with regard for our mutual dependence on others as individuals, groups and nations.

A Preparation for Life

We want our children to become good citizens who contribute to their community. We aim for our children to have the necessary knowledge, concepts, skills and attitudes to equip them for their futures. Our curriculum seeks to develop self-esteem, self-discipline and the ability to make the best of themselves as they take their place in society. We want to develop happy and confident individuals with a secure foundation in learning that will last throughout their lives

Broader Curriculum

Our curriculum includes not only the formal programme of lessons, but the 'informal' programme of extra-curricular activities, before and after school clubs, theatre visits, sporting opportunities and residential experiences. We believe these make St. Joseph’s a special place for our children.
